Key Challenges & Emerging Reflections on Climate Change, Tourism & Resilience in Greece: New Discussion Mapping Report

The discussion mapping report “Key Challenges and Emerging Reflections on Climate Change, Tourism & Resilience in Greece” is now available following the Climate Policy Breakfast on Climate Change, Tourism & Resilience in Greeceheld in Athens on 29 May 2026.

The report captures the main themes, recurring concerns, reflections, and open questions that emerged during the high-level policy dialogue, which aimed to provide a structured forum for strategic exchange on the growing impacts of climate change on the Greek tourism sector and the emerging challenges related to destination resilience, sustainability, adaptation capacity, and governance.

Bringing together representatives of the tourism sector, local and regional authorities, public institutions, research organisations, civil society, and European Climate Pact Ambassadors, the dialogue explored how climate risks, environmental pressures, and the climate transition are reshaping tourism systems, destinations, and local economies across Greece. Particular attention was given to issues related to climate exposure and territorial inequalities between destinations, adaptation challenges and implementation barriers, data and knowledge gaps, sustainability and competitiveness trade-offs, and governance and coordination challenges among tourism stakeholders and public authorities.

Rather than functioning as a policy evaluation or advocacy document, the report provides a structured mapping of the recurring concerns, implementation issues, and open questions that emerged during the discussion, contributing to the public dialogue on the impacts of climate change on Greek tourism, the adaptation potential of destinations, and the challenges associated with the sector’s resilience and sustainability.

The Climate Policy Breakfast on Climate Change, Tourism and Resilience in Greece was organised by INZEB, in its capacity as the European Climate Pact Country Coordinator in Greece, and conducted under the Chatham House Rule, allowing participants to exchange views openly and in confidence without attribution to individuals or institutions.

The report has been released as part of the European Climate Pact’s ongoing activities in Greece and helps strengthen structured dialogue and cross-sectoral exchange on climate-related challenges affecting Greek society.

The report is currently available in Greek, with an English version coming soon.
