The second co-creation workshop for the Athens Energy Portal, held on March 31st, 2025, continued the collaborative journey toward building a smarter, more energy-efficient city. Participants from diverse stakeholder groups came together to explore how digital tools can support municipal energy transparency, citizen engagement, and climate action.
During the session, participants expressed strong expectations for the platform to highlight local energy-saving initiatives and best practices. Citizens emphasised the importance of seeing real-time energy consumption data for municipal buildings, ideally grouped by neighbourhood and easily comparable. This kind of transparency was seen as essential for building trust and holding public authorities accountable.
Technical discussions focused on the need for high-resolution data, including hourly energy consumption per building, per square meter, and per user, complemented by meteorological and building-specific information. Participants noted that a single general meter would not be sufficient, calling instead for targeted, multi-point measurements to ensure accuracy.
Another core theme was the importance of accessible and meaningful data visualisation. Stakeholders emphasised the need for clear visual tools, such as graphs, maps, and reports, particularly those that could illustrate energy poverty and highlight the needs of vulnerable groups.
The workshop also surfaced critical barriers to progress, including a lack of trained municipal staff, outdated procedures, and insufficient real-time data infrastructure. Proposed solutions included targeted upskilling, institutional collaboration with energy professionals, and the adoption of international standards like ISO 50001.
This second workshop laid a strong foundation for the co-creation of the Athens Energy Portal. It underscored the need for a systemic approach, anchored in collaboration, data transparency, and citizen empowerment.
