On Tuesday, 26 November 2025, a working-level meeting was held at the Hellenic Ministry of Culture to explore synergies between cultural heritage policy and climate action, in the context of the EU Climate Pact and Greece’s evolving climate and cultural strategies.
The meeting was chaired by the Honourable Minister of Culture, Ms. Lina Mendoni, with the participation of senior Ministry officials including Ms. Olympia Vikatou, Director General of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage, and Ms. Elena Kountouri, Head of the Directorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities. Also present was Professor Costas Cartalis, Scientific Advisor to the Minister on Climate Change.
Representing the EU Climate Pact community were the Country Coordinator for Greece Alice Corovessi and the EU Climate Pact Ambassadors Konstantina Siountri, Dr. Alexandra Politaki, and Christos Kalantzis. The discussion also included the valued participation of Evangelia Georgitsi, from the European Commission Representation in Greece, who has offered continued support to the Greek Climate Pact community.
The meeting was held in a constructive and forward-looking spirit, allowing for the presentation of specific proposals to enhance citizen engagement on the intersections of culture and climate, including a thematic session “Climate Crisis and Culture” within the frame of the EU Climate Pact National Event 2026, a public dialogue event “Living Heritage – A Dialogue on Climate and Culture”, scheduled to be delivered in Spring 2026, and expansion of the Climate and Cultural walks, a citizen engagement initiative.
The EU Climate Pact community expresses its sincere appreciation to the Ministry for its openness and constructive engagement.
We look forward to the opportunity to work together in support of shared goals for a resilient cultural heritage future.
