In a pivotal move towards a sustainable future, the European Commission’s 2016 “Clean Energy for All Europeans” initiative aimed to empower consumers and reshape energy markets. Now, a groundbreaking study “Clean” Energy Bills in Greece, conducted by INZEB, in collaboration with Heinrich Boell Stiftung Foundation and the Greek Consumers’ Association EKPIZO, sheds light on the transformative potential of energy bills in Greece.
Authors Alice Corovessi (INZEB), Vicky Tzega (EKPIZO), and Kyriaki Metaxa (Heinrich Boell Foundation) delve into the complexities of energy billing structures. This study not only proposes reforms for clearer, more transparent bills but also emphasises the critical role bills play in enhancing citizens’ understanding and active participation in the energy transition.
In the wake of global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions impacting energy accessibility, the study underscores the need for resilient energy policies. It reveals vulnerabilities, including overreliance on fossil fuels, insufficient support for renewable energy storage, and neglect of energy conservation measures.
