Youth Climate Awareness and Leadership Programme in Crete

The Youth Climate Awareness and Leadership Programme is an initiative under the EU Climate Pact that aims to equip young individuals with the knowledge, tools, and leadership skills necessary to tackle the pressing challenges of climate change. The programme will be held across various iconic locations in Crete from November 21st to 25th, 2024 and will feature interactive activities designed to inspire and empower the youth. Organised by INZEB, the EU Climate Pact Coordinator in Greece, in collaboration with the Region of Crete, this programme is a call to action for the youth to become climate leaders and stewards of sustainability.

The Youth Climate Awareness and Leadership Programme includes:

Climate Walk at Melidoni Cave, Rethymno (21 November 2024): Students aged 12–16 will explore the geological marvel of Melidoni Cave, part of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Psiloritis. This guided exploration will highlight how the cave’s formations, such as stalactites and stalagmites, serve as natural records of ancient climate conditions.

Climate Walk at Kato Zakros Gorge, Lasithi (22 November 2024): This activity, set against the breathtaking landscape of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Sitia, provides an in-depth look at the effects of climate change on mountain ecosystems.

Peer Parliament in Heraklion (23 November 2024), Archanes (24 November 2024) and Chania (25 November 2024): This youth-centred forum will enable students and young people aged 18-30 to voice their concerns about climate change, brainstorm solutions, and develop action plans. The discussions will focus on Crete’s specific environmental challenges, including water scarcity, biodiversity loss, and sustainable practices in agriculture and tourism.

The programme combines hands-on exploration with critical discussions to deepen understanding of climate change impacts. Activities like the Peer Parliament foster collaborative problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership skills.
