Democracy & Climate Change

A few days ago, on the occasion of Democracy Restoration Day in Greece, and in collaboration with the Municipality of Athens, we had the honour to organise the event “Democracy and Climate change”, at the summer camp of the Municipality of Athens in Agios Andreas.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Haris Doukas, the Mayor of Athens, who talked with the children and discussed the value of participation and dialogue as foundations of a just and democratic society.

EU Climate Pact Ambassador Alexandra Politaki explained the link between democracy and climate change, while Christina Vasiliou, Municipal Councilor for Preschool Education and Children’s Camps of the Municipality of Athens, emphasised the importance of the Democracy Restoration Day.

The children expressed their thoughts on democracy and climate change by writing a message on a leaf which they placed on the “Tree of Democracy”. Afterwards, they participated in special designed activities: an environmental quiz and a gardening workshop, where they learned how to transplant herbs lead by Diana Fagoudi, Aspa Papanikolaou, and Ioanna Soura from the EU Climate Pact Partner We4All, as well as a Climate Fresk workshop for children under the guidance of Aspasia Provou from the Climate Fresk network of facilitators in Greece.

A special thanks to Eirini Dimitropoulou, Office of the Municipal Councilor for Preschool Education and Children’s Camps of the Municipality of Athens, Vasiliki Stoumpou, Director of the Children Camp of the Municipality of Athens in Agios Andreas, EU Climate Pact Ambassador Christina Sarris for the mobilisation of Climate Fresk facilitators in Greece, Christos Gerasimidis, and all the employees at the summer camp of the Municipality of Athens in Agios Andreas who assisted us in the implementation of the activities.
