Climate Action in the Valonia Oak Forest of Xiromero

Within the framework of the European Climate Pact, a two-day Climate event dedicated to the Valonia Oak Forest of Xiromero was successfully held on 22-23 May 2026, with the active participation of students, teachers and local citizens.

The event, organised by INZEB in its role as the European Climate Pact Country Coordinator in Greece, together with European Climate Pact Ambassador and Mayor of Xiromero, Ioannis Triantafyllakis, the Municipality of Xiromero, and with the support of Europe Direct Region of Western Greece, aimed at raising awareness and mobilising the local community to protect one of Europe’s last great oak forest

Through workshops and the action “Talking with the Mayor about the Climate”, elementary school students from Fyteies discussed about climate change and its impact on the daily life, proposed climate solutions and created their own climate messages.

High school students and local residents participated in a climate walk at the forest, interacting with the natural environment and understanding the effects of climate change on the local ecosystem, biodiversity and local resources.

An open discussion held at the Municipal Library of Skourtou, brought together adults and elderly residents to share stories and memories connected to the forest, highlighting its importance for the local community and the urgent need for its protection.

The events were supported by the participation of the European Climate Pact Ambassadors, Marianna Rappou, Dimitris Kollias, and Maria Voutsina.

We would like to thank all students, teachers, residents and partners for contributing to these two meaningful days and strengthening local climate action.
